# Wiring and Fuse Box Repair in West Covina

## How RV harnesses are built and where they give up

An RV harness is assembled quickly on a production line, run through a wooden or aluminum structure, stapled or clipped along the way, and closed inside a wall before anyone can inspect it. The wire itself is usually adequate. What fails is everything around it: the routing, the protection where it crosses metal, the terminations, and the fact that nobody who works on the coach later can see any of it.

Chafing is the classic. A bundle passing through a hole in a metal member without a grommet vibrates against the edge for years. Insulation wears through, the conductor touches the frame, and the result is either a blown fuse or a short that welds itself intermittently depending on how the coach flexes. Those faults appear and disappear with road motion, which makes them frustrating to chase and easy to misdiagnose.

Terminations are the second. Factory crimps are generally acceptable when they were done correctly. What we find in the field is a mix: crimps with no seal in a wet location, connectors that were never fully seated, and stranded wire clamped under a screw where the strands spread and half of them carry nothing. Each one adds resistance and heat.

Rodents are a genuine problem in Southern California storage. A coach that sits on a lot for months collects nests, and insulation is nesting material. We see harnesses with entire sections stripped bare. Repairing that properly means replacing the damaged run rather than taping over it, because a taped repair in a wall cavity is a fault waiting for the next humid season.

## Distribution panels, blade fuse blocks and thermal damage

The main distribution panel on most towables houses the AC breakers, the DC blade fuse block and the converter section in one steel enclosure. It is a sensible design and it concentrates a lot of failure into a small space. Every DC circuit passes through that fuse block, and the block sees the ambient conditions of a bay that breathes humid night air and dry afternoon air all year.

Oxidation on blade terminals raises resistance, resistance produces heat under load, and heat accelerates oxidation. The visible endpoint is a browned or deformed terminal, and by then the block is compromised. Reseating a fuse scrapes the oxide off and restores the circuit for a week or two, which is exactly why owners describe the same circuit failing repeatedly over a season.

Overfusing is the other panel problem and it is more serious. When a circuit blows fuses repeatedly, the tempting fix is a larger fuse. That removes the protection from the wire without removing the fault, and it is the mechanism behind a great many RV compartment fires. When we find a fuse rating that does not match the wire gauge, we find out why the circuit was blowing before restoring the correct rating.

Replacing a panel is sometimes the right repair even when only one section has failed, because the terminals feeding the block are frequently as compromised as the block itself. We replace the terminals, verify wire gauge against fuse rating on every circuit, and label the result so the next repair does not start with an hour of tracing.

## Correcting previous work and undocumented additions

A large share of the wiring problems we repair were introduced by earlier repairs rather than by the factory. The pattern is consistent across used coaches: an accessory added by splicing into whatever circuit was closest, a wire run straight to the battery post with no fuse, household solid core wire used where stranded belongs, and wire nuts inside a wall cavity in a vehicle that vibrates constantly.

Wire nuts deserve a specific mention because they are so common and so wrong here. They rely on friction and are designed for solid conductors in a building that does not move. In a vehicle they back off, they trap moisture, and they eventually arc. The correct termination in an RV is a properly sized crimp with adhesive lined heat shrink, or a rated connector in an accessible location.

Unfused additions are the dangerous category. A conductor connected directly to a battery post with no protection is a fault waiting to happen, and a large bank can deliver enough current to make that conductor glow. Every circuit needs protection at the source, sized to the wire it protects, and we add it as a matter of course whenever we find an unprotected run.

Documentation is what prevents the next round of this. We label circuits, note gauge and fuse rating, and record any addition we make on the panel schedule. On coaches that arrive with nothing labeled, mapping the panel is often the most valuable thing we deliver, because it turns every future repair from an investigation into a task.

## Harness work during body, remodel and conversion projects

Wiring work is easiest and cheapest when a wall is already open, which is why we handle a lot of it alongside collision, water damage and remodel projects. When a sidewall comes off for structural repair, the harness inside it is visible for the only time in its life. Replacing chafed sections, adding protection and pulling spare conductors for future use costs very little at that moment and a great deal later.

Water damaged coaches need a harness inspection as part of the repair rather than as an afterthought. Water that traveled a wall cavity followed the wiring, and corroded conductors inside intact insulation are common. The insulation looks perfect while the copper underneath is green and resistive. We check terminations in any area that took water and replace what has degraded.

On van conversions and skoolie builds, wiring is a design phase rather than a repair. Panel location, cable routing, load calculation, fusing and future expansion all get decided before insulation and paneling close the walls. Doing it in that order is the difference between a build that can be serviced and one that has to be torn apart to change anything.

## Frequently asked questions

### I smell hot plastic but nothing has stopped working. What is that

Take it seriously and stop using the coach. Hot plastic almost always means a connection carrying current through a resistive joint, most often a fuse block terminal, a battery cable lug or a transfer switch contact. The circuit still works because current is still flowing, it is just heating something on the way. That condition precedes most RV compartment fires. Get it in and let us find it before something in that bay ignites.

### Is it a problem that a previous owner used wire nuts in my RV

Yes. Wire nuts hold by friction and are designed for solid conductor wiring in a building that does not move. An RV vibrates continuously, which backs them off over time, and they trap moisture in a damp cavity. The correct termination here is a properly sized crimp with adhesive lined heat shrink, or a rated connector in a location someone can actually reach. We replace them whenever we find them.

### Someone put a bigger fuse in to stop it blowing. Is that a real problem

It is one of the more dangerous things we find. A fuse protects the wire, not the device, so a larger fuse leaves the wire unprotected while the fault that was blowing the original is still present. This is the mechanism behind a lot of RV compartment fires. We restore the correct rating for the wire gauge and then find out why the circuit was overloading, because the fuse was reporting something real.

### Rodents chewed my wiring in storage. Can it just be taped

Not properly. Tape over damaged insulation in a wall cavity fails on the next humid season and leaves a conductor exposed where nobody can see it. The right repair is replacing the damaged run or splicing with sealed crimps and adhesive lined heat shrink, then adding loom or conduit through the affected area. We also look for nest material near heat sources, because that is a fire risk independent of the wiring damage.

### Can you map and label my RV electrical panel

Yes, and on a coach with no documentation it is often the most useful thing we deliver. We identify what each circuit feeds, verify wire gauge against fuse and breaker rating, note any additions a previous owner made, and label the panel schedule.
