# How to Check a Fifth Wheel Pin Box for Stress Cracks

Pin box cracks start at weld toes and around fasteners, and they announce themselves as a fine line in the paint with rust bleeding from it. Check with the trailer level and the light low, clean the area first, and look at the frame the box is bolted to as well as the box itself.

## What the pin box is doing and why it cracks

The pin box is the assembly at the front of a fifth wheel that carries the kingpin and transfers everything the trailer does into the tow vehicle. Vertical load, braking, acceleration, and the twisting that happens whenever the truck and trailer are at different angles all pass through it.

It is a fabricated steel structure bolted or welded to the front of the trailer frame, and it lives at the point of maximum load concentration on the whole coach. Everything about its life is fatigue.

Fatigue cracks do not start from a single overload. They start at a stress concentration, grow a tiny amount on every cycle, and become visible long before they become dangerous. That is the good news in this article. A pin box gives you warning.

The bad news is that the warning is a fine line under paint on a dirty part of the trailer that nobody looks at. Which is why this inspection is worth doing deliberately rather than hoping to notice.

## Setting up so you can actually see anything

Do this with the trailer disconnected, level and stable on its landing gear, on a hard surface. You want to be able to get in front of and underneath the front of the trailer safely.

Clean the area first. Road film, grease and dust hide hairline cracks completely, and no amount of squinting compensates. A wire brush and a rag over the pin box, the mounting plates and the frame rails ahead of the first crossmember is fifteen minutes well spent.

Use a bright light held at a low angle rather than pointed straight at the surface. Raking light shows a fine line where direct light washes it out. A phone flashlight held nearly parallel to the metal works well.

Do this in daylight if you can. Colour matters, because rust staining is one of the primary indicators and it is hard to judge under a work light.

## Where cracks actually start on a pin box assembly

Cracks form where the section changes abruptly and where load concentrates. On a pin box that means a short and predictable list of locations.

- The weld toes where the pin box structure meets its mounting plate
- The ends of any gusset, where the reinforcement stops and the plate continues
- Around every mounting bolt hole, spreading from the hole toward an edge
- The kingpin plate itself, radiating from the pin
- The junction where the pin box assembly meets the trailer frame rails
- The frame rails themselves for a foot or two behind the attachment
- Along any previous repair weld, which is the most common location on an older trailer
- At the attachment points of any air ride or shock absorbing pin box component

## Telling a crack from a scratch or a paint line

A fatigue crack in painted steel almost always shows as a fine, slightly raised line in the paint, because corrosion products under the coating lift it. Run a fingernail across it. A scratch is a groove. A crack usually feels like a ridge.

Rust bleeding is the strongest indicator. A thin brown stain running downward from a line, particularly on a part of the trailer that is otherwise sound, means moisture is getting into something that should be solid metal.

Cracks follow load paths, which means they run in directions that make sense. A line that starts exactly at a weld toe and runs along it is a crack. A random line that crosses a weld at an angle and continues onto an unstressed area is probably a scratch or a paint defect.

If you are not sure, clean the paint off that small area down to bare metal and look again. A crack is still a crack on bare metal and a paint mark disappears. This is a reasonable thing for an owner to do on a small area and it settles most questions.

## The other symptoms that point at the front structure

Not every warning is visual. A trailer that has developed movement at the front end usually behaves differently before anyone sees a crack.

New noises when hitching and unhitching, or a clunk on acceleration and braking that was not there last season, deserve an inspection. So does a change in how the trailer sits relative to the truck bed.

Look at the front cap of the trailer for new cracks in the fiberglass at the lower corners, and at the interior for trim that has separated at the front wall. When the front structure flexes more than it used to, the body attached to it shows it.

Check the landing gear mounts at the same time. They are welded to the same frame region, they see high loads, and cracks there are common and equally serious in their own way.

## What happens if you find one

Stop towing. That is the honest answer and it is not a sales position. A crack in a pin box or the frame it attaches to is a structure that is progressively failing, and the failure mode is a trailer separating from a truck at speed.

Do not weld over it. Welding across a crack without stopping the crack, preparing the joint and correcting the geometry that caused it produces a repair that fails again, usually sooner and usually larger, because the heat affected zone is now bigger than the original problem.

A correct repair means finding the full extent of the crack, drilling a stop hole at the tip so it cannot run while the work happens, grinding the crack out to a full penetration preparation, welding it out with the right process and filler for the base material, and then addressing the geometry with revised gusseting so the stress concentration is gentler than it was.

Where the plate or the assembly is broadly fatigued rather than cracked in one place, it gets replaced. Building up a tired plate with weld metal produces a hard, brittle structure that cracks somewhere new.

## Getting a trailer with a suspect pin box to Yorba Linda

If the crack is small and you are confident, some owners tow slowly and locally to a shop. If it is significant, or if it is in the frame rather than the pin box, transport it rather than towing it. That decision deserves a phone call before it deserves a hitch.

The weld toes where the pin box meets its mounting plate, the ends of gussets where reinforcement stops, around mounting bolt holes, the kingpin plate radiating from the pin, and the junction with the frame rails. On older trailers the single most common location is along a previous repair weld, which is why any earlier repair deserves the most careful look of all.

### Can a cracked pin box just be welded up

Not by running a bead over the crack. That leaves the crack tip intact, it keeps propagating under the new weld, and the heat affected zone makes the second failure larger than the first. A correct repair stops the crack with a drilled hole at the tip, grinds it out to a full penetration preparation, welds it with the right process and filler, and then revises the gusseting so the stress concentration that caused it is gentler.

### Should I check the trailer frame as well as the pin box

Yes, and most owners stop too early. The pin box transfers its load into the frame rails, so cracks frequently appear in the rails for a foot or two behind the attachment rather than in the box itself. Check the landing gear mounts at the same time, since they are welded to the same frame region and carry high loads. Cracks in the frame are more serious than cracks in the box and they are easier to miss.
