# Airstream Repair in West Covina

Airstream builds riveted aluminum travel trailers and touring coaches that owners keep for decades, including Classic, Flying Cloud, Bambi and Interstate. OCRV Center repairs Airstream units for West Covina owners at the Yorba Linda facility, with aluminum panel work, riveting, structural repair and polishing.

## Known weak points

- Rivet loosening and shifting along panel seams from decades of road vibration
- Segment separation at the belt line on older trailers
- Floor to shell attachment corrosion on trailers with any water history
- Clearcoat and polish condition on the aluminum exterior
- End cap damage from impact, which is difficult to correct without proper technique
- Window and hatch seal compression on high mileage units
- Interstate and Atlas roof cap seams behaving like any van conversion

## A riveted monocoque is not a framed trailer

An Airstream shell is a riveted aluminum monocoque. The skin is the structure, which is fundamentally different from a conventional trailer where a frame carries the load and the skin covers it.

That means every rivet is structural. A line of loosened rivets is not a cosmetic issue, it is a section of the trailer that has stopped carrying load the way it was designed to.

Repair work therefore follows aircraft practice more than RV practice: correct rivet selection, correct hole preparation and correct sequence. A repair done with the wrong fastener looks fine and performs worse than the damage did.

## The floor to shell joint is where water history shows

Airstreams attach the shell to the floor along a perimeter joint, and that joint is where any water that has ever been in the trailer eventually reports.

Corrosion there is the single most consequential finding on a used Airstream. It is also the hardest to see, because it sits underneath and behind trim.

On any older Airstream we are asked to evaluate, that joint gets inspected regardless of what brought the trailer in. Finding it early is the difference between a section repair and a shell off rebuild.

## End caps and the reason they are expensive

The front and rear end caps are compound curved aluminum panels, and correcting damage in them requires forming rather than filling.

Aluminum work hardens as it is worked, so a panel that has been hammered on by someone without the right technique may not be recoverable afterward. The first attempt matters more here than on almost any other repair.

That is why end cap work is priced the way it is and why we would rather see an undamaged attempt than an improved one. If the panel is still original and unmolested, the options are much better.

## Frequently asked questions

### Are loose rivets on my Airstream cosmetic

No. The shell is a riveted aluminum monocoque, meaning the skin is the structure and every rivet carries load. A line of loosened rivets is a section of the trailer that has stopped carrying load the way it was designed to. Repair follows aircraft practice: correct fastener, correct hole preparation, correct sequence.

### What is the most important thing to check on a used Airstream

The floor to shell perimeter joint. Any water that has ever been in the trailer eventually reports there as corrosion, and it sits underneath and behind trim where it is hardest to see. Finding it early is the difference between a section repair and a shell off rebuild.

### Someone already tried to fix my end cap dent

That matters, and not in a good way. Aluminum work hardens as it is worked, so a compound curved panel that has been hammered on without the right technique may not be recoverable. We would rather see an undamaged panel than an improved one. If it is still original and unmolested, the options are much better.
